Partnering for the rest of the Season and Tournament

This is the subject we covered in our 2 thru 5 year class a year or so ago. With the New Year here and the tournament coming I thought it would be something that I would share with everyone again.

Thoughts on partnering:
Partnering describes the way we interact and relate to our fellow officials. Generally, we think of it in terms of what we do on the floor. The following ideas demonstrate a broader vision, one that includes attitude,  demeanor, and character. Partnering is a verb and therefore calls us to action. Preparing is…
1. Stepping outside of our comfort zone and doing what is right for the situation, our partners and the game.
2. Preparing  ourselves mentally so that the anxiety resulting from a natural  fear of failure does not paralyze us but mobilizes us to succeed.

3. Maintaining perspective that the game is not here for us- we are here for the game.
4. Allowing our competitiveness to show itself through being the best “I”can be, NOT by being better than “you.”

5. Recognizing that each one of us-although we have arrived on different paths- have earned our place.

6. Checking our egos to make sure we are not trampling  over others.

7. Giving and receiving feedback professionally and respectfully.

8. Celebrating, sincerely, the success and accomplishments of others.

9. Contributing to the quality of other’s experiences because any group or community that works together cannot live in a bubble and be effective.

10. Accepting responsibility for ourselves- including our circumstances, decisions and attitude. Who we are and what happens to us is not somebody else’s fault. Be a problem solver, not a finger pointer.

Weekly basketball quiz

At our training and rules review meetings, we are reviewing a quiz that was provided to all members during the previous week. The quizzes are to sharpen our skills and encourage best-practice officiating.

You can download the first week’s quiz here for your review.  It is in Microsoft Word format.

First GCBOA Inc. 2012/13 meeting is at 7P on 10/29 at Landmark

We have our first GCBOA meeting this Monday October 29th at 7:00 PM at Landmark Christian. Due to some building issues we will not be in the same building as last year. We will be in the first building on the left as you enter Landmark. There is plenty of parking out in front of the building and we will have Board Members directing you where to go from there.

We have a very full schedule for our first meeting so we need everyone to be on time. Anyone that arrives after 7:15 will NOT receive credit for the meeting.

Angelo Zolotas has sent out a rules quiz which I would encourage everyone to get online and take. We will be sending out a quiz every Friday before each Monday’s meeting. Then as part of every Monday’s Association Meeting we will review the answers. So please participate in this valuable learning tool.

We will be taking pictures before the meeting for anyone that does not have a picture on the roster or wants to update the picture. Pictures will start at about 6:45 and also be available after the meeting is over.

Assigners 10 Commandments

To start the season off, it is probably a good idea to refresh everyone’s memory of the Assigners 10 Commandments

  1. Thou shalt not contact the Assigner with scheduling problems at the last minute, unless it is a dire emergency.
  2. Thou shalt not ever fail to show-up for an assignment.
  3. Thou shalt be certain to check your e-mail inbox on a daily basis and that the Assigner has your correct e-mail address.
  4. Thou shalt accept assignments graciously, no matter what the mileage distance or game fee.
  5. Thou shalt not brown-nose the Assigner.
  6. Thou shalt confirm all assignments with the home school in advance of game day.
  7. Thou shalt reply to all correspondence from the Assigner on a timely basis.
  8. Thou shalt keep accurate records of your officiating assignment schedule.
  9. Thou shalt be certain to arrive at schools in sufficient time to be prepared to officiate the contest at the designated starting time.
  10. Thou shalt recognize the importance of each contest to coaches and players and officiate accordingly.
